The Centre for Advanced Software Engineering (CASE) was conceptualised in 1995 out of an idea suggested to UTM by the then Minister of Defence YB Datuk Seri Mohd Najib bin Tun Razak for UTM to develop capacity in world-class software engineering. The intention then was to provide opportunities for advanced studies and professional development for current and future needs of software-based industries in Malaysia.

In 2004, after witnessing the benefits of industry-based academic programme in software engineering, CASE expanded by starting the collaboration with the Faculty of Computing in managing Master program. The first Master program in Information Security in Malaysia.

In 2010, CASE was elevated to become a school headed by a Dean. It was then renamed Advanced Informatics School. Launching of Advanced Informatics School was inaugurated by Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah.

In 2011, it started first enrollment international students and first time intake for Research program which is Doctor of Software Engineering, Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy.

In 2012, AIS took a next step by offering another two courses in the Master program to increase student enrollment by offer Master of Science (Information Assurance) and Master of Science (Computer system Engineering).

Currently, to become one of the favorite choice to student, AIS is offering a new course Master of Science (Informatics).
